Изначально BMW i8 был представлен в виде концепта BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics. Впервые был представлен на 2009 году. В 2010 году BMW объявила о том, что начнёт серийное производство автомобилей в 2013 году под официальным названием BMW i8. Автомобиль оснащен гибридной силовой установкой: 1,5-литровый бензиновый турбомотор + электродвигатель. Мощность составляет 362 л.с, а стартовая цена равна 126 000 евро. В январе 2014 года еще не выпускаемый серийно i8 попал в ДТП. За рулем автомобиля находился водитель-испытатель, который не справился с управлением на мокрой дороге.
